Wilhelm Tell, the valiant crossbowman, maverick and outdoorsman, has been stylised to a symbolic figure of righteous resistance. But who was the marksman Tell really? A freedom fighter, an individualist or perhaps just a murderer? And what kind of men gather together at midnight councils to pledge their allegiance to tradition and the fatherland? What is justice - and is it even possible for an individual to take his fate into his own hands? Can Schiller?s drama still be considered a guide for resistance today?
